Robin D’Hondt y Merlin Fuel, campeones 1:8 Pista – Bélgica

“The 6th and last round of the Belgian championship was also held at the track of Charleroi, the original idea was to have this race at the track of Bierset but sadly enough the track had to close its gates for an airport expansion.
Friday evening we arrived there, rain was falling out of the skies. Think the gods don’t like me or so, 6 Belgian championships this year => 6 times rain on Sunday or Saturday … Great!
Saturday when the track was finally dry, qualifications had to be run. So I nearly had no practice time.
First qualifying suddenly my personal transponder didn’t work anymore … As I wasn’t the only one with a “sudden” dead transponder I knew it couldn’t be broken. But ok, after changing some setup things in the computer of the lap timing all worked fine again.
Second qualify my engine was a little bit to lean so I had to come into the pits. I drove 5th time because of the pit stop but I did have fastest lap time with 13.9.
Third qualify was driven on Sunday morning. Wet track … and like this it stayed the whole day.
Most people were packing up their stuff to go home. I was unpacking around 2 in the afternoon to drive the final. Many people with a weird look when they saw me unpack, but why not … the last race of the year. My position in the championship wasn’t gonna change whether I drove or not. Just wanted to have some fun but I do have to admit Werner Smolderen had to convince me to drive the final.
When the final was getting closer I saw that Tom Smolderen and I were about the only ones of the 1/8 F1 that were planning to drive…
In the Final Tom and me had much fun, I won the final and Tom ended up second.
So with 4 wins and 2 second places I am Belgian Champion 2008 1/8 F1
In the 1/8 F2 final youngster Daan Haling (son of my second pitman) won the race and is the Belgian champion F2 2008.
I want to thank all my sponsors for all they did for me during the year:
Serpent Motorsport, Mega, ATS tires, Merlin Fuel, Ghiant Aerosols RC Car Colors and RC Tech.
Special thanks to my father and Lode Haling for the good pitting during the whole year. ”

Per-Ola Hard dominates final round of Swedish Nats
Team Merlin Sweden driver Per Ola Hard dominated the seventh and final round of the Swedish Cup Series over the weekend taking his 720 08 to TQ honours and race victory.

Racing at the bumpy low traction Trollhattan track, Peo was fastest in qualifying by 5 seconds and in the 45-minute final took the victory by a massive 3 lap margin.
The victory, Peo’s first of the 2008 series, helped him to secure Swedish Cup Vice-Champion honours. Having just returned from racing in Japan, Peo was quick to thank Japanese team mate Yuya Sahashi for the special “Japan S-720 setup” that worked perfectly at this Swedish track.

Merlin Ulster GP

Merlin Fuel Ulster GP
Ballymoney in Northern Ireland was host to the first ever Merlin Fuel Ulster Grand Prix on September 28th with nitro cars making a successful return to the once popular nitro venue. Organised by the Ulster Model Car Club, the GP attracted a quality entry including former Irish National 1:10 200mm Champions Chris Steele & Stephen Hayes, and British Championship race winner Mark Gilliland.
With competitors receiving a very warm welcome on their arrival to the track, many of whom who were making their first visit, the organisers also put on a very tasty complimentary BBQ for all the drivers and their mechanics during the lunch break.
In qualifying it was Steele driving a Kyosho that claimed TQ honours from Gilliland’s Xray. In the final the pair had a thrilling battle for the lead, swapping positions lap after lap, but a small error by Steele was eventually enough to allow Gilliland to break clear and take the victory. 2007 Irish Champion Hayes, also driving an NT1 completed the podium. The Top 3’s efforts were rewarded with Dublin Crystal trophies and Merlin Pro Racing fuel plus of course the customary champagne that is an essential part of any motorsport podium celebration. Victory in the B Final went to the event’s youngest racer Calvin Kirby who was also rewarded for his efforts with Merlin fuel.
Following the success of the Merlin Fuel Ulster Grand Prix it is planned to make the Ballymoney circuit a regular fixture on the 2009 Irish 1:10 200mm National Championship calendar.

Robin D’Hondt takes victory at Belguim nats RD.4
Last weekend took place the 4th round of Belgium 1/8 On-Road Championship.Without time to rest after the Euro Championship in Valencia, Robin D’Hondt, managed to take the victory in a hard racing day, clearly conditioned by the scattered showers and changing weather. Here is the full Chornicle:
Last weekend the 4th round of the Belgian Championship was held at the track of Roeselare. I came straight from “every day 35°” Spain to “4 seasons in one day” Belgium. The weather forecast wasn’t so good for the weekend with sunshine turning to wind & rain and then sunshine again, so grip was changing every hour.On Saturday I was curious how my setup from Spain would work on Roeselare … and like I thought, not really. Springs much to hard, and no stability all around. As I was driving purple all around and front shocks in middle hole I went to all blue springs and moved front shocks in highest hole. After I changed this it started raining and I couldn’t try anything anymore.

On Sunday the first qualifier came up and while I was racing I was thinking of what I could change on my car because the fastest laptime I was driving was 14.4 and last year it was 13.6 so I was way off the pace. For the next heat I just changed the whole setup of my car. I tried to find a setup in my head that was just easy to drive and fast. I like to drive with a car that has much stability in the back so I went to red springs in the back, blue in the front, 45W in front, 40W in rear (was driving 45 all around), rollcenter in front 1 mm down, expodential in my transmitter from 0 to -10, and from 2 toe-in to 2.5. Once again it started to rain so the second qualify round was literally flushed away.Third heat and there was no grip at all so I thought maybe my setup would work … and it did.Car felt good, constant and fast enough to set the pace but then after 3 minutes of racing it started raining for 30 seconds or so. This ruined my chances of TQ but I still took second place on the grid. While we were training just before the final it started to rain but on slightly. This is how it had been all weekend – Rain for 20 minutes just enough to make the track wet and then it stops and dries again. So it wasn’t wet enough for rubber tires. I tried 33 shore but for this is it was to wet. I told my dad to put aqua tires on and take my car to the grid. As the countdown began I was looking to the other cars to see what tires they had on. Gunther Van Staey on TQ had rubber tires. Some parts of the track were still dry so after one lap racing I took over the lead and drove away from the pack while Gunther was struggling to get his car around the track.
I stayed in the lead for the entire race. Gunther was most of the time in second I think but in a tire change all went wrong and he lost many laps. For me the last pit stop my dad asked me to put 33 shore again because the track was almost dry.But I thought for the last 4 minutes … why change tires and risk something going wrong. Leave the tires on and I will drive safely … uhum, wrong choice, as I was driving trough slow corners I took a good look at my front tires and was thinking isn’t there supposed to be black there?I saw white spots where there used to be black … weird … my car was suddenly on the surface and I was driving on my rims. So the last 2 minutes I came in for the 33 shore (I had 5 laps in front of the second). With these 33 shore tires I drove the fastest lap of the race, almost 4 seconds faster then the fastest laps of the other drivers, and took the victory.

2. Marc Van Passel – 79 laps
