Merlin Fuel Ulster GP

Ballymoney in Northern Ireland was host to the first ever Merlin Fuel Ulster Grand Prix on September 28th with nitro cars making a successful return to the once popular nitro venue. Organised by the Ulster Model Car Club, the GP attracted a quality entry including former Irish National 1:10 200mm Champions Chris Steele & Stephen Hayes, and British Championship race winner Mark Gilliland.

With competitors receiving a very warm welcome on their arrival to the track, many of whom who were making their first visit, the organisers also put on a very tasty complimentary BBQ for all the drivers and their mechanics during the lunch break.

In qualifying it was Steele driving a Kyosho that claimed TQ honours from Gilliland’s Xray. In the final the pair had a thrilling battle for the lead, swapping positions lap after lap, but a small error by Steele was eventually enough to allow Gilliland to break clear and take the victory. 2007 Irish Champion Hayes, also driving an NT1 completed the podium. The Top 3’s efforts were rewarded with Dublin Crystal trophies and Merlin Pro Racing fuel plus of course the customary champagne that is an essential part of any motorsport podium celebration. Victory in the B Final went to the event’s youngest racer Calvin Kirby who was also rewarded for his efforts with Merlin fuel.

Following the success of the Merlin Fuel Ulster Grand Prix it is planned to make the Ballymoney circuit a regular fixture on the 2009 Irish 1:10 200mm National Championship calendar.
